Protection
To get maximum corrosion resistance the surface of the stainless steel must be kept clean. This is easily done and usually the simple falling of the rain upon it will suffice. Also a regular hose down or if you are inclined warm soapy water (sunlight liquid). This may vary from once to four times a year. Attention should be given to sheltered areas during routine cleaning to ensure that accumulations of airborne contaminants are removed.
It is important to be aware that the appearance of stainless steel guttering cannot be regarded as completely maintenance free as the corrodents that adhere to its surface can lead to discolouring or staining. Therefore if there is nearby construction using non-stainless steels, mortar/there is a chance of cement splashes, contact with structural steel, scaffold-tubing etc these particles must be removed immediately. Again a clean water rinse is usually quite adequate.
The goal of your cleaning and maintaining should be to keep the stainless steel's protective chromium oxide layer intact as this is what prevents corrosion. It is therefore important not to use the following: steel wool/metallic scourers/sandpaper, mineral acids, bleaches, chlorine cleansers, course abrasive powders or silver-cleaners. Some of these can scratch the surface destroying the chromium protective film or leave carbon steel deposits which can subsequently develop into rust spots. Never allow mortar removers or diluted hydrochloric acid to be used on the guttering. Building contractors or tradespersons not trained in working with stainless steel are not always aware that the best and easiest way to clean the guttering is wash down with clean water.
Debris such as leaves and small twigs should be removed on a regular basis also.
If the guttering has been reinstalled due to painting etc and there have been fingerprints or greasy marks left then warm soapy water and a clean damp cloth or chamois leather cloth will often remove these also. If stubborn, then spray with Silicone Spray (XL general purpose and anti-friction) and wipe with a clean, soft dry cloth.
